LIT sends 10 students to National SkillsUSA


BEAUMONT – Lamar Institute of Technology will send 10 students to the National SkillsUSA competition in Kansas City, Kansas, on June 21.

SkillsUSA is a national organization that brings together teachers and students to promote a skilled work force. The group boasts 300,000 members across the United States.

LIT students competed in the regional and state SkillsUSA contests for the opportunity to attend the national competitions.

Brian Roberts will compete in the Action Skills event. Action Skills requires the student to demonstrate an occupation skill in an area in which he or she is trained. Roberts’ faculty advisor is Sharon Jacobs.

Clinton Kyle will compete in Computer Maintenance. In the Computer Maintenance event, contestants identify and repair computer hardware malfunctions, solve configuration problems and install common components, in addition to taking the A+ Certification exam. His faculty advisor is Luke Bourgeois.

Shad Peveto is LIT’s entry into the Firefighting competition. This event tests students in both written and oral presentations as well as hands-on demonstrations. Peveto is advised by Christopher Delacerta.

Clifton Pinson will compete in Job Skill Demonstration A, and Shannon Kitchen will compete in Job Skill Demonstration Open. These events require that competitors demonstrate job skills in their area(s) of training. Pinson and Kitchen are advised by Steve Judkins.

Ralph Nesthill will compete in the Related Technical Math event. In this competition, students take a written exam in which they solve equations related to work skills. Nesthill’s advisor is Pat O’Connor.

Clint Gudier is a participant in the Telecommunications Cabling event, where he will test to worldwide industry standards for data and voice connections, physical and logical networks and signal transmission. His advisor is Weldon Jacobs.

The Welding Fabrication team from LIT is made up of Alam-Acolhua Soria, Zachary Burnes and Scott Weaver. The team will build a designed project using materials provided to them. The team’s advisor is John McKeehan.
