Beaumont - With the goal of providing greater safety for community employers, workers and the general public, Lamar Institute of Technology is receiving a $100,000 Texas Mutual Insurance Co. grant to fund the college’s risk management institute.

This is the third consecutive year that Texas Mutual, the state’s leading provider of workers’ compensation insurance, has awarded this grant to the college to support the risk management program. The presentation will be made on Mon., March 4, at noon in LIT’s Multi-Purpose Center Conference Room.
“Over the past few years, we’ve seen the great benefit of offering workplace safety courses to area employees—making the Beaumont workforce safer,” said LIT Continuing Education Coordinator Angela Clark. “We are grateful for the continued support of Texas Mutual, which helps us offer these valuable resources to local workers.”

LIT launched the Safety Awareness Institute in 2017 to provide training to reduce work-related accidents and injuries. The program provides a variety of courses related to workforce safety in Beaumont at no cost to employees of area businesses and industries. Since the launch, LIT has provided Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) certification courses, courses in American Heart Association (AHA) CPR/first aid, forklift operations and aerial lift operations.

Since 1999 Texas Mutual has awarded $7.6 million in safety education grants, and more than 30,000 students have attended free safety institutes offered at various colleges. LIT is one of 10 colleges in Texas that provides safety classes via funding from Texas Mutual.

“For 20 years we’ve partnered with Texas community colleges to ensure tens of thousands of workers get the education they need to work safely,” said Eric Bourquin, vice president of safety services at Texas Mutual.
