Beaumont – Lamar Institute of Technology highlights Black History Month festivities with a unique combination of food, fanfare, solemnity, presentations and scholarship winner announcements on Wed., Feb. 20, at 10 a.m. in the Multi-Purpose Center.

LIT Alumni and Orange Mayor Larry Spears, Jr. will speak, focusing on the theme, “Remembering the Past/Celebrating the Future.” Also featured will be Beaumont United High School singers Voices United directed by Brock Perry. Star Awards presentations will be made and Black History Scholarship winners will be announced.

LIT GED Adjunct faculty member Constable Christopher Bates will lead the Negro National Anthem, with LIT President Dr. Lonnie Howard giving introductions, and closing remarks from Vice President and Provost Dr. Kerry Mix.

The national anthem will be led by Executive Associate, Finance, Bishell Appu; Director of Marketing Chris Elliott; and Public Service and Safety Administrative Associate Melinda White-Davis.

The program is just one of many Black History Month activities planned all month on campus. The celebration continues on Feb. 26 when LIT students read books that were collected in a book drive to elementary school students, and ends on Feb. 27 with a talent show from noon to 2 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Center.
