BEAUMONT – Lamar Institute of Technology recently received two awards from Workforce Solutions of Southeast Texas, including the 2019 Special Initiative Partners Award. The award honored LIT for launching the inaugural Women’s Entrepreneurship Boot Camp program that graduated 31 students. LIT’s Dean of Strategic and Workforce Initiatives Dr. Miranda Phillips wrote the grant to deliver the program.

"We were delighted by the enthusiastic response from the community to the first offering of the Women’s Entrepreneurship Boot Camp,” Phillips said.  “We had a great group of participants and are hoping to have the opportunity to offer this again in the future, in partnership with Workforce Solutions-Southeast Texas.”

LIT also received the 2019 Youth Career Expo Silver Sponsor Award for the college’s participation in the Youth Career Expo at Ford Park that was postponed until February this year due to flooding by Tropical Storm Imelda.

ExxonMobil Mechanical Manager and keynote speaker Natalie Thompson praised the collaborative efforts between LIT and ExxonMobil for workforce training and marketing initiatives.

LIT Executive Vice President/Provost Dr. Kerry K. Mix, who spoke on behalf of LIT President Dr. Lonnie L. Howard, reported how the Institute helps fill the needs of the local business community. He also gave his interpretation with a spin on Workforce Solutions’ slogan in the 2019 Annual Report: “Let’s Get to Work…With Education in Weeks, Not Years at LIT.”
