BEAUMONT – Lamar Institute of Technology recently was ranked #11 out of 14 nationally accredited colleges with online associate degree programs for homeland security in 2021 by Best Value Schools.

For LIT, this is the second honor bestowed in two weeks. The Institute was also ranked #15 nationally for the Most Affordable Technical & Trade Schools-2021 by College Consensus.

According to, the top 14 schools were ranked “using a matrix that includes cost, faculty-to-student ratio and graduation rate. The lower the cost and faculty-to-student ratio, the higher the school is ranked.  (Also) The higher the graduation rate, the higher the school is ranked.”

Through detailed research, user-friendly guides and hundreds of college rankings, said it assists students by routinely gleaning numbers from large pools of resources so students can choose the right school and maximize their overall college experience.

LIT President Dr. Lonnie L. Howard was visibly moved by the announcement.

“We know our programs are among the best in the nation. But, having been selected by another outside source also reinforces the value of our programs and an education from LIT. I know I speak for everyone here when I say how proud this latest acknowledgement from Best Value Schools makes us.”

Students enrolled in the Associate of Applied Science program in Emergency Management and Homeland Security learn how to respond to both natural and man-made disasters. This program builds on general education, then providing major coursework in emergency management, terrorism and homeland security. Graduates find employment in entry-level positions or can transfer to a four- year college to advance their knowledge. Service sector professionals also benefit from this degree.
