The Lamar Institute of Technology (LIT) Radiologic Technology program expanded its hands-on training program with the addition of a Carestream DRX Mobile X-Ray System, a digital portable imaging unit widely used in today’s healthcare environments.

The new equipment, funded by the Carl D. Perkins Grant through the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, allows students to gain experience with mobile radiography before entering clinical settings. Mobile radiography is often performed in high-pressure situations involving critically ill patients, where time and urgency limits opportunities for instruction.

“Students were often learning how to manipulate this equipment for the first time in front of real patients during clinical rotations, which is not an ideal learning environment,” said Brenda Barrow, Radiologic Technology Program Director. “This new system allows students to build confidence and competency before they ever step into the workforce, which speaks to our mission here at LIT.”

In their first year, radiology students will learn to safely operate the mobile unit in LIT’s labs, including navigating hallways and doorways and properly positioning the x-ray tube. As students progress through the program, their use of the mobile x-ray system will expand to align with advanced coursework and clinical expectations.

To support the integration of the new technology, faculty will complete two days of in-service training with Carestream representatives ahead of the Spring 2026 semester, ensuring instruction reflects current industry standards and best practices.
