Selection Process

Dental Hygiene - Associate of Applied Science

Applicants to the Dental Hygiene Program must meet the Conditions of Enrollment before applying to the program. The Conditions of Enrollment require that each applicant demonstrate a minimum 2.5 GPA, and be college ready in reading, writing, and mathematics as determined by the TSI Assessment or approved alternative test. Additional conditions require successful completion of Pre-Enrollment courses prior to submitting a program application; including Anatomy and Physiology I (BIOL 2301 and 2101), Anatomy and Physiology II (BIOL 2302 and 2102), Introduction to Microbiology (BIOL 2320 and 2120), and Composition I (ENGL 1301). All applicants are also required to complete the pre-admission ATI TEAS exam (TEAS for Allied Health), before applying to the program. A minimum total score of 58.7% is recommended on the TEAS.

Once the applicant has fulfilled the Conditions of Enrollment, they will follow the procedures for application, selection, and admission to Allied Health Programs, listed on the Allied Health Admission Application webpage. https://www.lit.edu/AlliedHealth/app/2024

Required Academic Courses

All Pre-Enrollment courses must be completed with a minimum grade of “C” or better by the application deadline. Due to the rigorous nature of the Dental Hygiene Program, applicants are strongly encouraged to complete the General Education courses before entering the program. If these classes are successfully completed at the time of application, additional points are awarded in the admissions ranking score calculation. All courses can be found on the Dental Hygiene degree plan. https://www.lit.edu/degreeplan/110/dental-hygiene/associate-of-applied-science

Selective Admission

Selection for enrollment to the Dental Hygiene Program is highly competitive. Thirty students are accepted for program admission each year, with a Summer III start date. Admission to LIT does not guarantee admission to the program. A selective admissions process is used to choose the most qualified applicants.

Selection of Applicants is Based On:

  1. Overall college GPA
  2. Science GPA
  3. Number of Repeated Courses
  4. TEAS Scores
  5. Completion of additional General Education (co-requisite) courses within the dental hygiene degree plan

A point system will be utilized to rank the applicants. The ranking score is computed based on the above criteria. The highest-ranking students will be eligible for full acceptance into the Dental Hygiene Program.

Dental Experience or Dental Assisting Certification

Bonus points will be awarded for one or more years of dental assisting experience or for maintaining a current Dental Assisting Certification. Dental experience must be within 5 years prior to program application or for foreign trained dentists. Work experience must be documented on the dental office’s letterhead and signed by the dentist. A copy of the active (non-expired) Dental Assisting Certification can be submitted via email. All documentation must be emailed prior to the application deadline to AHAdmissions@lit.edu.
