Hazlewood Exemption Act

The Hazlewood Application is good for one Academic Year (Aug-Jul) and must be renewed every year. Additionally, students using Hazlewood must request it be applied to their account every semester by submitting the Certification Request Form once enrolled in classes for that semester.

If a different Dependent Child has used the Veteran's Hazlewood hours previously, then a Revocation Form must be submitted to the institution that child attended and LIT before the new child can use the benefit.

Paperwork Required

  • DD-214 (Member-4 copy)
  • Hazlewood Application
  • VA Letter of Eligibility (if necessary)

Additional Paperwork for Dependents

Relationship Document (i.e. Birth Certificate, Marriage Certificate, Adoption Papers, Recent Income Tax Return, Divorce Decree, etc.).

  • If veteran is deceased due to service-related circumstances
    • Report of Casualty, DD Form 1300
  • If veteran is deceased due to non-service-related circumstances
    • Death Certificate
  • If veteran is 100% disabled or unemployable due to service-related injury or illness
    • Current VA disability rating

NOTE: Student and veteran (if not the student) must reside in the state of Texas in order to use this benefit and must register with the Hazlewood Online Database at the Texas Veterans Commission's website: www.tvc.texas.gov/education/hazlewood
