Faculty Responsibilities
Accommodation memos are best submitted to the instructor before or at the beginning of the semester. Students may request accommodations and revisions to previously assigned accommodations through the Special Populations Office during the semester and therefore, might submit an accommodation memos to instructors during the semester. No accommodations should be provided until the accommodation memo is received by the instructor from the student. Any assignments, projects or tests given before receiving an accommodation memo from a student should not be accommodated as accommodations are active from the day it is recieved by the instructor.Instructors are to return 'Instructor Confirmation Forms' to the Special Populations Coordinator. Any alterations to the accommodation letter should be brought to the attention of the Special Populations Coordinator.
Student Responsibilities
Students with disabilities have the same responsibilities as any other students to meet and maintain LIT's academic standards. They have the responsibility to advocate for their individual needs and to seek information, counsel, and assistance as necessary to be effective self-advocates. Students should have knowledge about their disability, their strengths and weaknesses, and how their disability impacts and functionally limits their activities.
Students are responsible for notifying the Coordinator of their disability, the need for accommodations, and for obtaining and providing documentation of their disability from a qualified, licensed professional. Students are responsible for paying for the cost of their assessments/evaluations/medical tests.
Accommodations are provided on a semester-by-semester basis. It is the student's responsibility to obtain the accommodation memos from the Coordinator each semester they attend courses. Any assignments, projects or tests given prior to an accommodation memo being given to an instructor will not be accommodated as accommodations are not retroactive.
The student is responsible for delivering the accommodation memos to each instructor. Students are encouraged to meet with their instructors to discuss the assigned accommodations. The student must give the accommodation memos and the instructor confirmation forms to all instructors every semester so the instructors will know what to provide and what changes to make.
All students are required to follow the Code of Conduct. Classroom disruptions or disruptions of the learning environment, that place an undue burden on the faculty or staff, or that distract the other students in the specific course(s) from hearing and focusing on the lecture, participating in class or concentrating when completing in-class assignments or tests may result in the intervention of security personnel, a review of the student's records by administration and staff, and his/her subsequent withdrawal from the college.
