Safety Awareness Institute

LIT's Safety Awareness Institute (SAI) was established in 2017 to provide safety and health training and education to workers and employers.

These courses are partially funded by the Texas Mutual Insurance Company and are excellent for organizations to update or include in their internal training.

 


Minimum enrollments are required. Dates and times may change without notice.Tuition for these sections are being offered at a discounted rate to the public. Registration must be completed before the first day of class.

Introduction to IC 80 Crane

14 Hours

Introduction to IC 80 Crane will provide the basic knowledge of IC 80 crane operation, including: principles of operation, inspection, nomenclature, applicable regulations, load chart calculations, and basic rigging. Course topics will cover the OSHA laws 1926.1427 (CC) Cranes and 1926,1419 Signals.

Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED 

8 Hours

Heartsaver® First Aid CPR AED is a video-based, instructor-led course that teaches students critical skills needed to respond to and manage an emergency until emergency medical services arrives. Skills covered in this course include first aid; choking relief in adults, children, and infants; and what to do for sudden cardiac arrest in adults, children, and infants.

This course teaches skills with the AHA’s research-proven practice-while-watching technique, which allows instructors to observe the students, provide feedback, and guide the students’ learning of skills.

This course is for anyone with limited or no medical training who needs a course completion card in CPR and AED use to meet job, regulatory, or other requirements.

Forklift Trainings

7 Hours

In this one day combination classroom hands on training students will learn safety operation procedures, OSHA regulations and certification valid for 3 years.

Students must wear shirts with sleeves, pants, and closed toed shoes to complete the forklift training coursework.  Arriving in tank tops, muscle shirts, sandals, dresses, and/or slippers will result in a dismissal from the class.

The following forklift equipment may be used during this course: Yale (4900 lb. Capacity), Daewoo (4450 lb. Capacity) and Pallet Jack (non-motorized) and Sky Trak 6000 lb / 36.*

*Not all equipment options will be used during the one day training.

We also offer this class in Spanish and we offer a Construction Forklift class (only available for those who have their Certified Forklift Operator card). 
Cherry Picker (Aerial Lift) Training

8 Hours

In this one day combination classroom hands on training students will learn safety operation procedures, OSHA regulations and certification on a 40’ Straight In-line Boom lift. 

Students must wear shirts with sleeves, pants, and closed toed shoes to complete the forklift training coursework. Arriving in tank tops, muscle shirts, sandals, dresses, and/or slippers will result in a dismissal from the class.

Industrial Radiography Initial 40hr Certification

Industrial Radiography Initial 40-hr Radiation Safety Course and Certification

40 hours.

This safety course is intended to meet State and Federal regulatory requirements for initial training to practice radiography with radioactive materials. The course is composed of 5 eight-hour days and concludes with an examination and a hands-on exercise. Successful completion of this course will allow the student to work as a trainee under the State of TX and all NRC agreement states. Course subjects include:
  • Fundamentals of radiation safety
  • Radiation detection and instrumentation
  • Collecting and Interpreting activity and exposure Data
  • Use of radiographic equipment
  • Pertinent Federal and State regulatory requirements
  • Generic operating, safety, and emergency procedures
 
Specifically, the course is designed to meet the requirements of 25 TEXAS ADMINISTRATIVE CODE §289.226 as an Agency Accepted Training Course under the Texas Department of State Health Services / Texas Regulations for Control of Radiation for personnel operating radiation-emitting devices. Upon successful completion of this course, students are trained to handle X-ray machines and Gamma Ray source carrying devices in the industrial application as trainees under a state certified Industrial radiography/RSO.

24 Hr HAZWOPER

24 hours.

This course in intended to meet the requirements found in 29 CFR 1910.120
(q)(6)(iii) for a Hazardous Materials Technician.

The presentation method of this course will be lecture, presentation, guided discussion, and hands on equipment use and spill response drill.

To pass the course there will be a written examination with a minimum passing grade of 70%. The hands on evaluations must be satisfactorily completed and the student must satisfactorily demonstrate competency in course objectives.
