BEAUMONT – About 40 Lamar Institute of Technology (LIT) students representing the departments of Process Operating, Instrumentation, Welding, Industrial Mechanics, Advanced Engine Technology, and even Utility Line Technology in Silsbee, gathered at Entergy’s Sabine plant in Orange to learn more about Entergy. Accompanying the group were five Technology Department instructors.

The three-hour session included a dialogue led by Entergy Plant Manager Luther Hill, a combination of interactive displays, a simulation of high-voltage hazards by a mobile ‘Arcs and Sparks’ unit, a tour of the premises, a Q&A session, and introduction to career opportunities at the company.

The meeting was arranged by LIT’s OPT Club Lead Advisor/Director, and Process Operating Instructor LG Williams. Williams said, this is the first time his LIT students have been provided this opportunity under Plant Manager Hill’s leadership.

The students learned about power distribution—power generation, transmission and distribution--converting energy, and emerging technology including future plans for a new plant, the Orange County Advanced Power Station. Hill also discussed the equipment: turbine deck, generator, Exeter and transformer, reviewing the aging and value of the equipment.

During the Arcs and Sparks demonstration, students listened and watched raptly as linemen explained and used various tools and gloves to retrieve downed wires, deflecting voltages from 600 to 30,000MW.

Hill also introduced the employees present, many of whom were LIT graduates. He encouraged students and graduates from various majors apply to jobs at Entergy, including internships. “Because of the use of water here, we even have a chemist,” he said.

The students were particularly interested in the equipment during the tours, careers and the Arcs and Sparks unit. Hill and Williams said they look forward to offering more opportunities for LIT students and Entergy to join together.
