Twenty-seven students from Lamar Institute of Technology (LIT) participated in the 2025 state SkillsUSA competition, held in Corpus Christi, TX, from April 2-5, 2025. This year’s competition provided an opportunity for students to showcase their technical skills and knowledge across a variety of fields. After weeks of preparation and training, the LIT team returned with nine gold medals and seven silver medals.

Among the gold medal winners were students who excelled in Technical Drafting, Internet of Things, Nurse Assisting, Job Demonstration A, Job Demonstration Open and Health Knowledge Bowl. In order to achieve a gold medal, students must show their expertise in their respective fields and demonstrate the real-world application of these skills.

“In the weeks leading up to SkillsUSA, our students dedicated themselves to preparing, putting in long hours, practicing their skills and staying focused on their goals. Their performance at the competition reflected the strong work ethic and commitment they brought to every step of the process,” Dr. Sid Valentine, President, said.

Silver medalists scored high marks in HVAC, Job Demonstration A, Job Demonstration Open and Health Knowledge Bowl.
The SkillsUSA competition provides an important platform for students to test their abilities and engage with peers from other institutions, fostering both competition and collaboration. Participants refine their skills in real-world scenarios, enhancing their professional growth and preparing them for their future careers.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the incredible students who represented LIT at the SkillsUSA competitions. Their dedication, talent and hard work truly shined, and watching them step up to the challenge with such professionalism and passion was inspiring,” Stacy Taylor, Skills USA advisor, said. “Whether they brought home medals or simply gained valuable experience, they’ve all proven what it means to strive for excellence.”

Students who placed at the state competition will go on to the 2025 SkillsUSA National competition in Atlanta, GA, from June 23-28, 2025. With the state competition behind them, LIT students and advisors are focused on preparing for the national stage, where they will have the opportunity to represent the college and compete against some of the top competitors from across the country.
