Lamar Institute of Technology (LIT) will offer an eight-week English as a Second Language (ESL): English Improvement I course from June 3-August 1, 2024. The course is tailored for individuals seeking to learn English as an additional language, with a focus on the practical application within a professional context.

“Clear communication is crucial for success in educational and professional settings,” said Ana Pereda, Director of Workforce and Continuing Education. “Non-native English speaker students and professionals can benefit from this course to improve their academic and career prospects.”

Classes will be held to accommodate a working schedule from 5:30-8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, in the LIT Technology Center.

The curriculum will cover fundamental skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening, with content directly applicable to industry settings; vocabulary development; phonetic precision; refining both oral and written communication abilities; and sound system mastery.

“Our course will be applicable to real-world experiences and will include interactive exercises to empower students to use their skills in day-to-day life and careers,” said Pereda. “ESL classes are inclusive and open to anyone interested in improving their English-language skills.”

Due to the assistance of the Texas Mutual Workforce grant, tuition for this course is reduced to $40. At course completion, students will get a certificate from the LIT Workforce and Continuing Education Department.
