LIT and BISD collaborate to bring high school students NextGen programs

Beaumont – NextGen, a groundbreaking agreement recently signed between Lamar Institute of Technology and Beaumont Independent School District (BISD), gives eligible high school students the opportunity to take college courses at Taylor Career Center (TCC) via dual enrollment so they will be better prepared to launch successful careers. 

The Institute was the sole finalist selected by BISD, and the terms and conditions of the signed memorandum of understanding for 2019-2020 will be effective Fall 2019. Goals are to develop these students’ critical thinking, computer and communication skills, solidify their lifelong commitment to learning, complete any necessary industry certifications, be comfortable working with peers and understand their roles as future leaders.

“I feel a special sense of gratitude to Dean of Strategic/Workforce Initiatives Dr. Miranda Phillips and Vice President for Strategic Initiatives David Mosley for getting us here,” LIT President Lonnie L. Howard said. “As you might recall, in 2016, I spoke about “My Vision” for a partnership with the Taylor Career Center during my installation. However, NextGen has surpassed anything that I could have ever imagined. Thursday was a historic day for LIT.”

Courses being offered as of Fall 2019 include: Advanced Engine Technology, Auto Collision, Child Care and Development, Computer Support Specialist, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, Drafting, Graphic Design, HVAC, Veterinary Technology and Welding Technology.

An advisory committee comprised of the college’s Dean of Strategic/Workforce Initiatives, the TCC principal and CTE Director will oversee the new program. Dr. Phillips hopes to add about 600 students in the near future.
