LIT hosted three teacher externs from the Workforce Solutions Southeast Texas Teacher Externship Program June 3-7. The program aims to connect educators to local industry. Teachers from Vidor, Port Arthur and Port Neches-Groves Independent School Districts learned about selective programs, career pathways, advising, dual enrollment, transfer pathways and developmental education and student success.

“The college has participated in this program for several years, and it is always a pleasure having them on campus with us,” said Allen Welch, Dean of Instruction. “We hope that they find plenty of things that they can take back to share with their students and colleagues.”

Additionally, the externs visited with instructors, sat in on general education courses, and got an up-close look at the functions of the pharmacy technology, respiratory technology and sonography programs.

“After my externship, I want my students to know that class sizes at LIT are small and the instructors provide hands-on learning experiences,” said Andrea Ballew, extern. “Several instructors shared that they themselves struggled in high school. They understand the importance of working with students to determine their learning styles.”

The externs closed the week with presentations on their experiences and a luncheon hosted by Workforce Solutions. For more information on how to get involved in the externship program, visit https://setworks.org/
